Requirements
The minimum age to rent a car in Finland is 20 years old with no maximum age limits at this time. Driving licenses must be held for at least one year and in the Roman alphabet and the English language for most vehicles some 4x4 vehicles require a driving license to be held for at least 2 years. If the license is not in English or the Roman alphabet an international driving license is suggested. Depending on the category of car, some car rental supplier may want to see two different credit cards at time of pick up. Headlights must be on at all times throughout the year. Pay attention when traveling in city areas as some traffic lanes are designated for public transportation vehicles only (buses, taxis etc). The use of a cell phone while driving is illegal in Finland and is punishable by law. Seatbelts must be worn at all times in the front and rear seats of the vehicle. Be careful when traveling in country areas as game animals like moose, reindeer and elk are known to frequently cross the roadways in these areas. In the winter months of December through February all vehicles must be equipped with winter tires.
Child Seats
Children under the age of 12 years or smaller then 1.5 meters tall must be placed in an appropriate safety seat for their age and weight. Children under the age of 3 years must be placed in the rear seat of the vehicle and in a child seat appropriate for their age and weight.
Speed Limits
In Finland the following speed limits apply: City areas: 50 km/h (31 mph) major roadways: 80 km/h (49 mph) or 100 km/h (62 mph), highways: 120 km/h (74 mph). Speeds are approximate please abide by posted signs in the country you are traveling.
Rules of the Road
Traffic travels on the right side of the road. Vehicles coming from the right have the right of way. In Finland international road signs are used, text is in the Finnish language.
Gas and Diesel
Gas and Diesel are available at most gas stations; hours of operation are from 7am to 9pm with some stations open 24hrs.
Tolls

Parking
Metered parking is popular in most cities. When metered parking is not available “pay-and-display” vouchers are required to be placed on the dashboard. Vouchers can be purchased at gas stations throughout the country.

When renting a car in an unfamiliar country it is always a good idea to find out what forms of insurance are required in the particular country you are traveling to as it can vary from country to country. The insurance guidelines of the country where you pick up the vehicle will be in effect for the duration of your rental even if the rental is returned to another country.
All of our rental rates in Finland will include third party liability and fire insurance. In Finland CDW and theft protection are optional and can be added to your rental at anytime prior to the pick up of your rental vehicle. In the event CDW and Theft are declined in order to take advantage of coverage offered by your credit card Kemwel asks for you to contact your credit card company to learn the specifics of your insurance coverage. Insurance details specific to your rental will print in the terms and conditions area of your rental voucher.

Required Coverage
Third party liability insurance is required for all rentals commencing in Finland. For your benefit Kemwel has included third party liability on all of its basic rental rates in Finland. Third party liability will cover any damages to people or property outside of the rental vehicle. Third party liability covers an unlimited amount in the event of bodily injury and from $383,000 up to an unlimited amount of coverage for property damage depending on rental supplier. Unlimited fire insurance is also included on all basic rental rates in Finland.
Optional Coverage
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft protection are optional for rentals commencing in Finland. Kemwel includes these two forms of insurance in our inclusive rental rates, generally at an advance purchase discount. CDW can be purchased locally for approximately $15-$23 USD per day depending on car category. Theft protection is also available locally for approximately $5-$8 USD per day and is also dependant on the category of vehicle rented. Most car suppliers in Finland will still have a deductible you will be responsible for which can range from $630-$2000 USD on CDW and Theft insurances. Super CDW is a supplementary insurance, which will lower the amount of the deductible sometimes as low as zero for a cost of approx $12 USD per day. Optional insurance may only be available with select car suppliers only and participation and cost can vary depending on car category.
General Information
When renting a vehicle in most European countries with Kemwel many of our suppliers will allow their vehicles to driven in Western European countries without any restriction. Some specific car categories may have restrictions due to insurance regulations; these types of vehicles include luxury vehicles, large vans and automatics. Restricted Countries
When renting a car in Finland vehicles are prohibited from traveling into: Albania, Bosnia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey and the Ukraine.

One-Way Rentals
International one ways are typically not allowed by the rental supplier however, domestic one-ways are available with most suppliers for a fee ranging from $0 to $150 USD depending on drop off location and car category. Not all vehicles may be allowed.
