The Hague is a town with many historical milestones, that was founded in 1248 by William II, Count of Holland. William II was meant to become the Holy Roman Emporer, but was killed in battle before this could occur. His unfinished castle, now called the Ridderzaal, is used for modern political events and an annual speech from the monarch. Also called Den Haag, the city has served as the administrative center for the government, even though it is not technically the capital. Also of note is the fact that the city was restricted from building city walls until the 1500's, and when they were finally allowed to, the town decided to build a city hall instead of walls, and was subsequently easily occupied by the invading Spanish during the Eighty Years' War.
