Netherlands Car Rental Driving Overview

General Information
The Netherlands is the perfect place to start your cheap car rental experience with Kemwel. This wonderful country has thousands of miles or well-connected roadways making exploration easy! However keep in mind that driving in the Netherlands may be different from what you are normally used to. To make sure you are well informed Kemwel has compiled a list of important things to keep in mind when renting and operating a motor vehicle in the Netherlands.

Requirements
In order to rent a vehicle in the Netherlands you must be at least 21 years old and have had your driver’s license for at least 1 year. A young driver surcharge of approx $8.50 USD per day may apply to drivers between the ages of 19-24 years of age. Some suppliers in the Netherlands have a maximum rental age of 75 years. All children under the age of 18 or smaller then 1.35 meters tall are required to travel in the back seat of the vehicle using a safety belt at all times. Children under the age of 3 year are also required to sit in the back seat of the vehicle using a child seat that is a proper fit for their size.

Speed Limits
In the Netherlands the following speed limits apply: city 50 km/h (31mph), major roads 80 km/h (49mph) or 100 km/h (62mph) and highways 120 km/h (74 mph).

Rules of the Road
Traffic travels on the right in the Netherlands and all buses and trams have the right of way. When traveling on multilane roadways in urban areas in the Netherlands, the middle lane is reserved for trams, buses and taxis.

Gas
Gas stations throughout the Netherlands are open from 8am to 9pm with some stations staying open 24 hours in the larger cities.

Tolls
At this time there are no toll highways in the Netherlands, however some tunnels and bridges may require a toll to be paid.

Parking
Areas marked with an “I” and “II” means no parking on the left of the street on odd dates and no parking on the right on even dates. Parking discs need to be displayed to park in Blue Zone areas, discs area available at tobacco shops and police stations.
 

Netherlands Car Rental Insurance Information

General Information
When traveling and renting a vehicle in an unfamiliar place it is always a good idea to find out what the insurance requirements are for vehicle rentals in that specific country. When renting a car with Kemwel in the Netherlands your rate will include any mandatory insurance necessary.

All of our rental rates in Netherlands will include third party liability and fire insurance. In Netherlands CDW and theft protection are optional and can be added to your rental at anytime prior to the pick up of your rental vehicle. In the event CDW and Theft are declined in order to take advantage of coverage offered by your credit card Kemwel asks for you to contact your credit card company to learn the specifics of your insurance coverage. Insurance details specific to your rental will print in the terms and conditions area of your rental voucher.

Required Coverage
Third party liability insurance is required for all rentals commencing in Netherlands. For your benefit Kemwel has included third party liability on all of its basic rental rates in Netherlands. Third party liability will cover any damages to people or property outside of the rental vehicle. Third party liability provides $1,775,000 up to $4,000,000 worth of coverage for injury to people or damage to property outside of the rental vehicle. Unlimited fire insurance is also included on all basic rental rates in Netherlands.

Optional Coverage
Collision damage waiver (CDW) and Theft protection are optional for rentals commencing in Netherlands. These two forms of insurance are included in all Kemwel’s inclusive rental rates in Netherlands. The cost for CDW locally is approximately $16-$22 USD per day depending on the rental supplier and car category. Theft protection is also available locally for about $5-10 USD per day and is also dependent on the rental supplier and vehicle category. Most car rental suppliers will have a deductible ranging from $200 USD up to $850 USD depending on the car category that you will still be responsible for in the event of collision or theft of the vehicle. Super CDW is a supplementary insurance that can be purchased locally with many suppliers to help reduce the amount of the deductible. In Netherlands the cost of super CDW is about $9 USD per day depending on supplier and lower the deductible to about $200 USD. Personal Accident Insurance is available with some suppliers locally for a cost of $5-$6 USD per day depending on the car category. Rental Restrictions in the Netherlands

General Information
Most all of the vehicles rented in the Netherlands through Kemwel have the ability to travel through most Western European countries without any restrictions. Certain vehicle categories due to insurance regulations may have restrictions; these categories include luxury vehicles, large vans and automatics. When thinking about renting a vehicle it is always best to make sure you are selecting the proper vehicle for your travel itinerary. Restricted Countries
When renting a car through Kemwel in the Netherlands the following countries cannot be traveled through or into with out prior notification and approval from Kemwel and our suppliers: Albania, Bosnia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Turkey and the Ukraine.

Note: Travel into most or all of these countries can be arranged for specific categories with advance notice to Kemwel. Some suppliers may also restrict travel in to Italy on certain car categories. One-Way Rentals
Domestic one-way rentals are available and are generally free of charge. International one-way rentals are also available and will incur additional fees. Not all vehicles are permitted on one ways and minimum rental lengths may apply
