Below you will find a detailed list of things that we here at Kemwel feel are important to keep in mind while renting and driving a car in Switzerland.
To rent a vehicle in Switzerland you must be at least 20 years old and have had your driver’s license for a minimum of 1 year. Some suppliers may also require your license to be accompanied by an international drivers license. Drivers between the ages of 20-24 years may be subject to a young driver surcharge of approx $12-$17 USD per day. If your are traveling with children under 7 years they are required to be in a child seat appropriate for their size and children between the ages of 7 and 12 are required to use a seatbelt at all times. The use of a cell phone while driving in Switzerland is prohibited unless using a hands free device.
The standard speed limits in Switzerland are: city 50 km/h (31mph), major roads 80 km/h (49mph), highways 100 km/h (62 mph) or 120 km/h (74mph).
Rules of the Road
Vehicles travel on the right hand side of the road and all vehicles traveling from the right have the right of way. Your engine must be turned off when stopped at all traffic lights and railway crossings.

Most gas stations in Switzerland are open from 8am until 10pm.
In order to access Swiss highways all vehicles must be equipped with a Swiss toll pass which is called a “Vignette” for approximately $27 USD available at Swiss National Tourism Offices.

Third party liability coverage is required for all rentals commencing in Switzerland. Kemwel includes third party liability insurance on all rental rates in Switzerland. Third party liability insurance provides $1,185,000 up to an unlimited amount of coverage for damages to property or injury to people outside of the rental vehicle. Unlimited fire insurance is also included on all of Kemwel’s basic rental rates.
For rentals taking place in Switzerland collision damage waiver and theft are optional and are included in all of Kemwel’s inclusive rental rates at an advance purchase discount. CDW is available locally for approximately $20-$35 USD per day depending on car rental supplier and car category. Theft protection is also available locally for approximately $5-$10 USD per day depending on car category and rental supplier. Many of the suppliers that we work with will still have a deductible that you will still be responsible for that ranges from $825-$1,700 USD for CDW and Theft. Super CDW is a supplementary insurance that is available locally to help reduce the amount of the deductible, it costs about $13-$74 USD per day reducing the CDW deductible from $0-$800 USD. Personal accident insurance can be purchase locally for about $5-$6 USD per day, which will provide death and disability coverage up to a set monetary amount for the driver and passengers of the rental car. Many of the vehicles rented through Kemwel in Switzerland can travel throughout Western Europe without any restrictions. There are some vehicles; due to insurance regulations that may not be able to travel into certain countries some of the vehicles include luxury vehicles, automatic vehicles and vans. Due to Kemwel’s great relationship with its suppliers has allowed for the creation of a special program that will allow for travel into select Eastern European countries. An additional surcharge may apply for rental vehicles being taken into Eastern Europe and not all vehicles are permitted. When planning your itinerary please take into consideration if it will be possible with the category of car you are planning to rent.
Vehicles rented in Switzerland through Kemwel cannot travel into or through the following countries without prior notification and approval from Kemwel and our suppliers: Albania, Bosnia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Turkey and the Ukraine.
