Croatia is a beautiful country with thousands of miles of roadways, islands and cities looking to be explored by you! When traveling to a country that you’re unfamiliar with it is always a good idea to be as informed as possible. Below you will find a variety of issues that we feel are good to be aware of before traveling to Croatia.
Requirements
In Croatia the minimum rental age with most suppliers is 18 years old with some suppliers having a maximum rental age of 70 years. Driver licenses must have been held for 2 years and in the Roman alphabet, if not in the Roman alphabet and international drivers license is suggested. Drivers between the ages of 19-24 may be subject to a young driver surcharge of approximately $ 24 USD per day. Age restrictions and young driver surcharge may vary by supplier and car category. Seatbelt must be worn at all times by all parties in the font and rear seats of the vehicle. Croatia has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to driving while intoxicated, authorities are allowed to administer Breathalyzer tests at random and those who refuse are considered to have admitted to being intoxicated and can be prosecuted by law. All vehicles must drive with their headlights on at all times day or night and driving while using a cell phone is prohibited unless using a hands free unit.
Child Seats
Children under 12 years must travel in the rear seats of the vehicle. Children 5 years and younger must be in a child safety seat.

Speed Limits
The following speed limits apply when traveling in Croatia: City areas max 31 mph/50 km/h, suburban areas max 55 mph/90 km/h, highways 80 mph/130 km/h.
Rules of the Road
Vehicles travel on the right side of the road. Turning right on a red light if prohibited unless a green arrow is present. When entering an unmarked intersection vehicles entering from the right have the right of way.
Gas and Diesel
Most gas stations in Croatia are open from 6 am to 8 pm; some city stations are open 24 hours. Please fill up before you travel, as gas stations are less frequent in country areas.
Tolls
When traveling out of the city of Zagreb the E59 and E70 both carry tolls.
Parking
There are many parking lots that are found in Zagreb and Dubrovnik. There are metered parking areas in many cities.

All of our rental rates in Croatia will include third party liability and fire insurance. In Croatia CDW and theft protection are optional and can be added to your rental at anytime prior to the pick up of your rental vehicle. In the event CDW and Theft are declined in order to take advantage of coverage offered by your credit card Kemwel asks for you to contact your credit card company to learn the specifics of your insurance coverage. Insurance details specific to your rental will print in the terms and conditions area of your rental voucher.

Required Coverage
For rentals commencing in Croatia, fire and third party insurances are mandatory and are included in all of Kemwel’s basic rental rates. Fire insurance with most suppliers covers up to an unlimited amount in the event of a fire. Third Party Liability covers damages to people and property outside of the rental car (buildings, other vehicles, pedestrians etc.). Third party liability in Croatia covers from $50,000 up to $315,000 depending on the car supplier.
Optional Coverage
Collision damage waiver (CDW) and Theft protection are optional for rentals commencing in Croatia. These two forms of insurance are included in all Kemwel’s inclusive rental rates in Croatia. Most car rental suppliers will have a deductible ranging from $400 USD up to $1700 USD depending on the car category that you will still be responsible for in the event of collision or theft of the vehicle. Super CDW is a supplementary insurance that can be purchased locally with many suppliers to help reduce the amount of the deductible. In Croatia the cost of super CDW can range from $8-$20 USD per day depending on supplier and lower the deductible to an amount determined by the local supplier. Personal Accident Insurance is available with some suppliers locally for a cost of $8-$25 USD per day depending on the car category.
General Information
Many of the vehicles rented through Kemwel in Croatia can travel throughout Western Europe without any restrictions. There are some vehicles; due to insurance regulations that may not be able to travel into certain countries some of the vehicles include luxury vehicles, automatic vehicles and vans. Due to Kemwel’s great relationship with its suppliers has allowed for the creation of a special program that will allow for travel into select Eastern European countries. An additional surcharge may apply for rental vehicles being taken into Eastern Europe. When planning your itinerary please take into consideration if it will be possible with the category of car you are planning to rent.
Restricted Countries
When renting a car through Kemwel in Croatia the following countries cannot be traveled through or into with out prior notification and approval from Kemwel and our suppliers: Albania, Bosnia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Turkey and the Ukraine.
NOTE: Travel into most or all of these countries can be arranged for specific categories with advance notice to Kemwel.
One-Way Rentals
Domestic one-way rentals are available with most suppliers free of charge. International one-way rentals are also available for a fee with most suppliers in Belgium. Minimum rental days may apply and not all categories maybe allowed.
