Requirements
In New Zealand the minimum rental age is 21 years old and drivers between the ages of 21-24 years may be subject to a young driver surcharge of approximately $9 USD per day. You must have a valid drivers license for a minimum of 1 year, if your license is not in English it must be accompanied by an international drivers license. Seatbelts must be worn by all vehicle occupants.
Child Seat Requirements
All children who are under the age of 5 years must be in a proper child seat for their size. Children between the ages of 5 and 7 years must use a child seat if available or if a child seat is not available they must be restrained by a safety belt. Children 8 years or older must use a seatbelt at all times.
Speed Limits
In New Zealand the following speed limits apply: urban areas: 50 km/h (31mph), open roads and highways 100 km/h (62mph)
Rules of the Road
Traffic travels on the left side of the road in New Zealand and vehicles turning left are to yield to oncoming traffic turning in the same direction. Pedestrians do not have the right of way except at crosswalks.
Gas
In New Zealand gas is sold by the liter and is often referred to as petrol.
Tolls
There are no toll roads in New Zealand at this time.
Parking
In New Zealand you must park in the direction of flowing traffic. You will find that metered parking and parking garages are very popular throughout many New Zealand cities.

Super CDW is a supplementary insurance that can be purchased locally with many suppliers locally to help reduce the amount of the deductible, in New Zealand Super CDW costs between $8-$14 USD per day and will reduce the collision deductible to $130-$300 USD.

When renting a vehicle in an unfamiliar country it is always a good idea to find out if there are any travel restrictions. As you may know New Zealand is made up of 2 islands one in the North and one in the South. Vehicles rented in New Zealand are not allowed to travel on the ferry that connects the two islands. If you wish to travel between the two islands you will need to drop off your car at the ferry port and pick up another on the other side. The North Island ferry port city location is in the city of Wellington and the city of Picton on the South Island. If you are planning to do this you will need to contact the supplier locally 24-48 hours in advance in order to have the vehicle ready on the other side. Kemwel must also be advised if you are planning to travel between the two islands at time of booking.
Restricted Countries
Travel outside of New Zealand is not permitted at this time. Rental vehicles are not allowed to travel on ferries.
One-Way Rentals
Domestic one-way rentals are available and are generally free of charge. International one-ways are not permitted at this time. Not all vehicles are permitted on one-ways and minimum rental lengths may apply.
