Darmstadt is a city in the federal state of Hessen in Germany. It was first declared a city in 1330 by the Roman Emperor Ludwig, and now boasts a population of almost 140,000 inhabitants. The city is one of four in the world with a chemical element named after it. This element is Darmstadtium, with an atomic number of 110. Also of note is the fact that Darmstadt is one of the very few cities in Europe that does not lie close to a coast or major river. With cheap car rental locations all over Darmstadt and a large variety of discount rental cars, there is no better way to tour Darmstadt than by car!
The ancient city of Darmstadt has unfortunately been almost completely destroyed by the British air raid in September 1944. This does not detract from the sights though! There still remains almost all of the prewar Jugendstil buildings, which are a variant of the art nouveau style, and there is the "Waldspirale" or "Forest Spiral" which was finished in 2000. It is a great example of Friedensreich Hundertwasser's (the famous Austrian architect and painter) colourful architectural designs. The city is self-styled as a city of science, and is home to many technological schools and companies.
