Charleroi is a city of approximately 500,000 inhabitants, located in the French speaking region of Belgium known as Wallonia. Charleroi got its start a bit late for a European community, in 1666 AD, when the Spaniards built a fortress around the small town of Charnoy to keep the imperialist French troops out of the coal laden land. The stronghold, shaped as a star, received the name of Charle-Roy in honor of the Spanish child king, Charles II. The French eventually took the city and expanded it into an upper and lower city. There is a difference between Charleroi and other large cities in Belgium, namely that there are no lavish palaces there and the land is hilly, instead of flat. The two centers of the city are located around 2 city squares. There are also two museums located in the town hall, a 17th century cathedral, and a Palace of Fine Arts located in town. Charleroi is infamous for it's grand 45km. light rail system that was built from the 1960s through the 1980s that was never opened or used due to the town deeming it never possible to operate profitably.
