Celje is the third largest city in Slovenia, with a population of around 48,000 inhabitants. It has a long history, dating from at least 46 AD when the Celts minted coins in the area. It then came under Roman rule, when many marble palaces were built here, and also at a time when it became known as Small Troy. At this time it was a populous area and very rich, being home also to the famed temple of Mars. An odd thing is, the entire city was razed in the 6th century, and not rebuilt until the Middle Ages, of which the influence on design is still evident.
