General Information
When renting a car in an unfamiliar country it is always a good idea to become familiar with traffic laws, rules of the road and other general information pertaining vehicle operation to ensure that you and your passengers are promoting the proper driving etiquette of the country. With Australia being the 6th largest country in the world, with over 556,000 miles of roadways traveling by rental car is almost a must and when doing so please keep in mind the following information.

Requirements
In order to rent a car while in Australia drivers must be a minimum of 21 years of age or older. Age requirements may vary according to car category. Drivers between the ages of 21 to 25 may have to pay an additional young driver surcharge to the rental company. Some car rental suppliers have maximum age restrictions at or around 75 years of age, which may also vary depending of the category of vehicle that will be driven. 

License Requirements
An international driver's license must accompany any drivers license that is not in English at all times. In order to rent a car in Australia international visitors must hold a license from their home country for the same vehicle class they will be renting. Probationary license or photocopies will not be accepted locally. 

Child Seats
Babies and infants 9 kilos or less (generally ages 0-6 months) and are shorter the 70 cm should be in a rear facing child seat. Children that weigh 9 kilos to 18 kilos (generally 6 months to 5 years) should be in a forward facing child seat. Children between 14 kilos and 26 kilos are suitable for a booster seat. Children should only be placed in the regular seatbelts only if they no longer fit into a booster seat.

Speed Limits
In most cities in Australia the maximum speed is 60 kph, in suburban areas max speed is 50 kph and maximum speed on most highways is 110 kph. If traveling in the Northern Territory please use caution, as roads in this area do not have speed limits.

Rules of the Road
