Szeged is the fourth largest city in all of Hungary, with a population of around 163,000 people. Though its history as Szeged can only be traced to the date of 1183, the famous ancient geographer and astronomer Ptolemy mentioned the town by the name Partiscum in the early 2nd century. Due to a flood in 1879, almost the entire town was wiped away. When the Emperor visited the town after the destruction, he promised to rebuild the town "more beautiful than it used to be", a promise he kept by building wide avenues and palaces.
