Requirements
The minimum rental age in South Africa with most suppliers is 18 years old, however some supplier may require you to be at least 21. Drivers 18 up to 23 may be subject to a young driver surcharge that can range from $12 USD per day up to $20 USD per day depending on the car provider. A maximum age limit of 70 year may apply to some rentals commencing in South Africa. International drivers licenses are highly recommended and some suppliers require them if your regular license is not in English. You are required to have had your drivers license for at minimum of 1 year with most car providers, however some require for you to have had it for at least 2 years for some categories. Children under the age of 3 year are required to be in a proper child seat for their size. Children over the age of 3 years must use a safety belt at all times. The use of a cell phone while driving is illegal in South Africa.
Speed Limits
The standard legal speed limits in South Africa are: major roads 120 km/h (75mph), minor roads 100 km/h (62mph), cities and residential areas between 60-80 km/h (37mph-50mph).

In some cases the rental supplier will want to see a written statement from your credit card company proving CDW and theft coverage.
Required Coverage
For all rentals commencing in South Africa third party liability and fire insurance are required and included on of Kemwel’s basic rental rates. Fire insurance provides an unlimited amount of coverage to the rental vehicle in the event it is involved in a fire. Third party liability provides insurance coverage to people and property outside of the rental vehicle that may get damaged or injured by the rental vehicle. The amount of third party liability coverage with rental suppliers in South Africa can range from $12.3 million up to an unlimited amount.
Optional Coverage
Collision damage waiver (CDW) and theft protection are optional with most suppliers in South Africa. Kemwel includes both forms of insurance on all inclusive rental rates in South Africa. Many suppliers will still have a deductible that you will still be responsible for in the event of a collision or theft, which can range from $0 up to $820 USD. Super CDW is a supplementary insurance that will reduce the deductible, it generally costs approximately $14-$49 USD per day depending on rental supplier and car category and can reduce the deductible as low as zero.

Vehicles rented in South Africa are prohibited from traveling into the following countries: Angola, Cameroon, Chad, Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Zaire, Zambia and the Central African Republic.
Note: Some suppliers may allow certain vehicle categories to travel in to Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe for an additional fee. If you plan to travel to one of these countries please advise Kemwel at time of booking.
