The first Maya settled in Cozumel 2,000 years ago. Cozumel derives its name from the Mayan words Cuzam (swallow) and Lumil (land of), which form the word Cuzamil (land of swallows). Conquered by the Spanish in 1518, the first Catholic Mass in Mexico was held on the island shortly thereafter, and is still celebrated on the 6th of May. Eventually, by the 18th century, Cozumel's population was wiped out by smallpox and a poor economy. However, by 1970, helped by Jacques Cousteau's proclamation in regards to the richness of the coral reef and the spectacular diving, the islands population grew to 10,000, and to the present day 75,000.
