No more free quarantine for Aussies

Original date of publication: July 27, 2020

Kemwel - Beginning July 18, Australian state governments will no longer cover two-week hotel quarantine costs for Aussies returning Down Under from abroad. This announcement comes as the country plans to reduce weekly international arrivals from 8,000 to under 4,000, according to Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

The first Australian state to announce this was New South Wales (NSW) where Kemwel provides low-cost Sydney car rentals. As the Sydney Airport will limit the number of international arrivals to ease the burden of the hotel quarantine system, new fees will reportedly apply to anybody entering NSW. Simply put, if you’re flying into Sydney from abroad, regardless of where you reside in Australia, you will be expected to pay for your own lodging.

New Australia hotel quarantine rules

Following suit, Australian nationals and residents will reportedly need to pay about AUD$3,000 (US$2,085) to cover their required 14-day quarantine, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. Families of four could potentially be charged up to AUD$5,000 for the duration of their stay

Special arrangements and discounts can be made for groups with additional adults paying AUD$1,000 (US$700) and children charged about AUD$500 (US$350). Moreover, children under 3 won’t be charged. Included in these fees are full-fledged accommodation and food for the allotted 14 day quarantine. Those who have acquired return airfare to Australia prior to July 12 won’t be charged for these revised quarantine costs. Financial assistance is reportedly available for those who qualify.

Australia COVID-19 response

State authorities across Australia have been furnishing nationals with free hotel accommodations for the past two months. Part of this effort strived to incentive Aussies to return home sooner rather than later instead of being stranded overseas. Over 35,000 Australian citizens and permanent residents have utilized this complimentary service since the hotel quarantine protocol began towards the end of March.

So far, these provisions have required over AUD$65 million of tax dollars, according to New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian in a recent press release. For the official, she believes that this is a matter of reciprocity.

“Australian residents have been given plenty of time to return home — and we feel it is only fair that they cover some of the costs of their hotel accommodation.”

Can international travelers come to Australia?

Only Australian citizens, residents and immediate family members can enter Australia. Tourism officials claimed in June that Australia could continue barring international visitors until 2021. Contingency and reopening plans are reportedly in the works. According to Johns Hopkins University data, there have been 9,980 COVID-19 cases and 108 deaths in Australia since the pandemic started. As for Australia's second-largest city, Melbourne is under a second lockdown until at least July 29 due to another recent outbreak.

South Australia hotel quarantine

Like NSW, South Australia where Kemwel offers cheap Adelaide car rentals will follow a similar arrangement, according to Premier Steven Marshall. Pricing will reportedly be identical to that of NSW’s.

Northern Territory hotel quarantine

As the homestate of our bargain Alice Spring car rentals, the Northern Territory has been charging new arrivals AUS$2,500 for two-week hotel quarantines since April 4. Special accommodations can be made for low-income individuals.

Queensland hotel quarantine

Foreign travelers in Queensland may need to wait a while to rent a car in Brisbane considering that the Brisbane Airport is limiting weekly international arrivals to 500. Based on new guidelines, the state government will charge single adults AUD$2,800 for two-week quarantine, AUD$3,710 for couples, and AUD$4,620 for a family of four with payment plans available.

Western Australia hotel quarantine

Despite no official pricing plan, July 17 is where Western Australia will begin charging hotel quarantines. Being the hub for our discount car rentals in Perth, this state has enforced a weekly limit of 525 international passengers, 75 a day, that began July 12.

Tasmania hotel quarantine

For some, travel in Tasmania may be easier here compared to other states since the government of this Australian state is still lending a hand to non-Tasmanians and individuals returning from abroad. Islands residents will need to self-isolate at home.

Victoria hotel quarantine

According to reports, the Victoria state government has paid the bill for hotel lodging in cities such as Melbourne while suspending international flights altogether.
