In Spain you must be at least 21 years old in order to rent a vehicle, however age restrictions may vary depending on car rental supplier and vehicle category. If you are between the ages of 21 and 24 you may be subject to young driver surcharge of approximately $7-$16 USD per day. If you are planning to rent a car in Spain you must have had your drivers license for a minimum of 1 year, it is also recommended to have an international drivers license as well. Do not use a cell phone while driving in Spain for if you are caught you could be fined up to 150 euros, however the use of hands free units are permitted.
Child Seat Requirements
In Spain if you are traveling with children under the age of 3 they are required by law to be in a suitable child seat that is appropriate to their size. Children between the age of 3 and 12 years are recommend to be placed in child seat, however if a child seat is unavailable they may use an adult safety belt in the back seat of the vehicle.
The standard legal speed limits in Spain are: city 50 km/h (31mph), major roads 90 km/h (55 mph), highways 100 km/h (62mph) or 120 km/h (74mph), residential 20 km/h (13mph)
Rules of the Road
All traffic travels on the right hand side of the road and pass on the left. Any vehicle coming from your right has the right of way. When entering a roundabout, any vehicle that is in the roundabout has the right of way.
Gas and Diesel
Gas stations are plentiful in Spain and are generally open from 7am to 11pm.
When traveling in Spain you will encounter a variety of toll roads. All tolls will accept cash (in euros) however some also accept credit cards. Toll amounts are determined by the vehicle class and distance traveled.
Vehicles are required to park in the direction that traffic flows. Pavement that is painted yellow indicates parking is not permitted. Two hour metered parking is popular in most Spanish cities.
When renting a car in an unfamiliar country it is always a good idea to find out what forms of insurance are required in the particular country you are traveling to as it can vary from country to country. The insurance guidelines of the country where you pick up the vehicle will be in effect for the duration of your rental even if the rental is returned to another country.

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection is included in all of Kemwel’s inclusive rental rates in Spain, generally at an advance purchase discount. Most rental suppliers have a deductible that you will still be responsible for in the event of collision or theft of the vehicle. In Spain the CDW and Theft deductibles range from $675 up to $2000 USD. For rentals commencing in Spain most are permitted to travel through most Western European countries without any restriction. However due to insurance regulations some specific vehicle categories may have restrictions including, luxury vehicles, large vans, and automatics. Note: Vehicles may not travel to the African continent (Morocco, Tunisia etc). Some specific vehicle categories may have restrictions on traveling in to Italy. One-ways between the Islands or between islands and the mainland are prohibited.
Domestic one-way rentals are available and most are free of charge, if a fee applies you will be advised at time of booking. International one ways are available and will incur fees. Not all vehicles are permitted and minimum rental lengths may apply.
