To rent a vehicle in Slovakia you must be at least 18 years old and have had your driver’s license for a minimum of 1 year. Some specific rental companies may require you to have had your drivers’ license for a minimum of 2 years. The use of a mobile phone while driving in Slovakia is illegal. Children who are under the age of 12 are not allowed to sit in the front seat of the vehicle. Children under the age of 4 or smaller then 1.35 meters tall must be in a car seat that appropriate to their size in the back seat of the vehicle. Slovakia practices a zero tolerance policy when it comes to drinking and driving, anyone who is caught driving under the influence may be subject to high fines and possible imprisonment.
The standard legal speed limits in Slovakia are: city 60 km/h (37mph), major roads 90 km/h (55mph) and highways 130 km/h (80mph).
Rules of the Road
Vehicle travel on the right-hand side of the road and must use headlights during the day between October 15th and March 15th. Vehicles coming from the right have priority and trams are only to be passed on the right.
Gas stations in Slovakia are generally open from 6am to 6pm with some staying open 24hrs. Most stations are located on main roads on the edge of town and accept most major credit cards.
In Slovakia you will need to obtain a tax toll disc from a post office in order to travel on toll motorways throughout the country.
Parking garages can be widely found throughout Slovakia and are the recommended place to park within the country.

In Slovakia CDW and theft protection are optional and can be added to your rental at anytime prior to the pick up of your rental vehicle. Fire and third party liability insurance are required on all rentals commencing in Slovakia. Kemwel includes both forms of insurance on all basic rental rates in Slovakia. Third party liability provides between €1.3 million and €1.42 million worth of damage and injury coverage to people and property outside the rental vehicle. Fire insurance provides unlimited coverage to the rental vehicle in the event it is involved in a fire.
For rentals commencing in Slovakia Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and theft protection are optional, however Kemwel includes these two forms of insurance in all inclusive rental rates in Slovakia. Most rental suppliers that we work with in Slovakia will have a deductible that you are responsible for that can range from approximately $ 665-$2155 USD for CDW and theft depending on the car supplier and vehicle category. Personal accident insurance is available locally for about $6-$11 USD per day and provides death and disability coverage for the driver and passengers in the rental vehicle.
Many of the vehicles rented through Kemwel in Slovakia can travel throughout Western Europe without any restrictions. There are some vehicles; due to insurance regulations that may not be able to travel into certain countries some of the vehicles include luxury vehicles, automatic vehicles and vans. When planning your itinerary please take into consideration if it will be possible with the category of car you are planning to rent.
Vehicles rented in Slovakia through Kemwel cannot travel into or through the following countries without prior notification and approval from Kemwel and our suppliers: Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria etc) Albania, Bosnia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey and the Ukraine.
