To rent a vehicle in Norway you must be at least 23 years of age and have had your driver’s license for a minimum of 1 year. Drivers 23 & 24 may be subject to a young driver surcharge of about $20 USD per day. Children under the age of 4 must sit in the back seat of the vehicle in a child seat that is appropriate to their size. All other passengers must use a safety belt at all times. The use of a cell phone while driving is strictly prohibited and those who fail to oblige could be subject to fines over $600 USD.
In Norway the following speed limits apply: Highway 90 km/h (56mph), city 50 km/h (31mph), open roads 80 km/h (50mph)
Rules of the Road
In Norway vehicles travel on the right and must have their headlight turned on at all times. All trams have the right of way and when entering a traffic circle (roundabout) traffic coming from the left has the right of way.
Gas stations are generally open Mon-Fri from 7am to 10pm. Do NOT use diesel from a red pump as it is for industrial use only and may damage the vehicle tank.
Many of Norway’s highways and major roads will require you to pay a toll based on the distance traveled and vehicle category. Various bridges and tunnels throughout the county may also require a toll to be paid.
Metered parking is a popular parking practice throughout Norway; meters generally only accept kroner coins and will supply you with a pass to display on your dashboard. Parking garages can also be found in many Norwegian cities.

For car rentals commencing in Norway fire and third party liability are mandatory. Kemwel has included these two forms of insurances on all rentals taking place in Norway. Third party liability covers damages to people and property outside of the rental vehicle and with most suppliers will cover an unlimited amount. Fire insurance covers the rental vehicle in the event of a fire and with most rental suppliers covers an unlimited amount.
For rentals taking place in Norway Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and theft protection are optional and are included in all of Kemwel’s inclusive rental rates at an advance purchase discount. CDW is available locally for approximately $45 USD per day depending on car rental supplier and car category. Theft protection is also available locally for approximately $12 USD per day depending on car category and rental supplier. Many of the suppliers that we work with will still have a deductible that you will still be responsible for that ranges from $1155 USD up to $1800 USD. Super CDW is a supplementary insurance that is available locally to help reduce the amount of the deductible; it costs about $16 USD per day reducing the CDW and theft deductibles to about $195 USD. Personal accident insurance can be purchase locally for about $10 USD per day, which will provide death and disability coverage up to a set monetary amount for the driver and passengers of the rental car. Most all of the vehicles rented in Norway through Kemwel have the ability to travel through most Western European countries without any restrictions.
