However, driving in Luxembourg may be very different from where you normally use to driving. Below you will find some helpful information that will prepare you for renting and driving a vehicle during your stay in Luxembourg.
To rent a vehicle in Luxembourg you must be a minimum of 21 years old and have had your driver’s license for at least one year. When driving at night you are required to flash you headlights prior to passing a vehicle on open roads.
Children under the age of 3 must sit in the back seat of the vehicle in a child seat suitable for their age and weight. Children under 11 years of smaller then 1.5 meters in height are required to travel in the back seat of the vehicle at all times unless using a child seat appropriate to their size in the front. All other vehicle occupants over the age of 11 years must wear a seatbelt at all times.
Standard speed limits in Luxembourg are: city 50 km/h, open roads 90 km/h and highways 130 km/h
Rules of the Road
In Luxembourg vehicles are required to drive on the right side of the road and pass on the left. All vehicles must be equipped with a warning triangle and horns can only be used during emergencies.
The average cost for a gallon of unleaded gas in Luxembourg is approx $4.94 USD and the average cost for a gallon of diesel is approx $4.37 USD. Gas stations throughout the country are generally open from 7am to 8pm.
At this time there are no toll highways in Luxembourg.
Metered parking and pay parking lots are popular in most of Luxembourg’s cities. There are areas in Luxembourg that require a disc to be displayed on your vehicles dashboard. Discs are available for purchase at police stations, shops and tourist offices.
When renting a car in an unfamiliar country it is always a good idea to find out what forms of insurance are required in the particular country you are traveling to as it can vary from country to country. The insurance guidelines of the country where you pick up the vehicle will be in effect for the duration of your rental even if the rental is returned to another country.
All of our rental rates in Luxembourg will include third party liability and fire insurance. In Luxembourg CDW and theft protection are optional and can be added to your rental at anytime prior to the pick up of your rental vehicle. In the event CDW and Theft are declined in order to take advantage of coverage offered by your credit card Kemwel asks for you to contact your credit card company to learn the specifics of your insurance coverage. Fire and third party liability are required on all rentals commencing in Luxembourg and are included on all of Kemwel’s basic rental rates. Fire insurance provides an unlimited amount of coverage for the rental vehicle if it is involved in a fire. Third party liability provides an unlimited amount of coverage for damage to property or injury to people outside of the rental vehicle.
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection is included in all of Kemwel’s inclusive rental rates in Luxembourg, generally at an advance purchase discount. Most rental suppliers have a deductible that you will still be responsible for in the event of collision or theft of the vehicle. In Luxembourg the CDW and Theft deductibles are approximately $765 USD. Most rental vehicles in Luxembourg are permitted to travel into most all Western European countries without any restrictions. However due to insurance regulations the following categories may have restrictions: luxury vehicles, large vans and automatic vehicles.
