For rentals commencing in Greece most car suppliers require the driver to be a minimum age of 21 years old, however age may vary by car category. Depending on the car supplier they may also have a maximum rental age of 75 years. Drivers’ licenses are required to have been held for at minimum of 1 year and accompanied by an international driver’s license. Seat belts are required to be worn at all times by all occupants of the vehicle. Children under the age of 12 must sit in the rear seat of the vehicle. The use of a cell phone while driving is prohibited in Greece.
In Greece the following speed limits apply: Highway 120 km/h (74mph), cities 50 km/h (31mph), major roads 90 km/h (55mph) or 110 km/h (68mph). Speed limits are approximate please abide by speed limit signs in the country you are traveling.
Rules of the Road
Vehicles travel on the right hand side of the road and pass on the left. Do not use your horn when traveling in a city as it is against the law in Greece.
Gas and Diesel
Most gas stations in Greece are open between the hours of 7am to 7pm.
Virtually all highways in Greece require you to pay some form of a toll. The tolls are required to be paid in cash and are based on the distance traveled and vehicle type.
Most large cities in Greece do no have on street parking, it is recommended to find a visitors parking area or hotel parking. Beware of yellow stripes along streets as parking within those areas is prohibited.

Third party liability insurance is required for all rentals commencing in Greece. For your benefit Kemwel has included third party liability on all of its basic rental rates in Greece. Third party liability will cover any damages to people or property outside of the rental vehicle. Third party liability covers an unlimited amount in the event of bodily injury and from $400,000 up to an unlimited amount of coverage for property damage depending on rental supplier. Unlimited fire insurance is also included on all basic rental rates in Greece.
For rentals taking place in Greece collision damage waiver (CDW) and theft protection are optional and are included in all of Kemwel’s inclusive rental rates at an advance purchase discount. CDW is available locally for approximately $20-$29 USD per day depending on car rental supplier and car category. Theft protection is also available locally for approximately $7-$13 USD per day depending on car category and rental supplier. Many of the suppliers that we work with will still have a deductible that you will still be responsible for that ranges from $385-$2000 USD for CDW and for theft ranges from $0-$910 USD. Super CDW is a supplementary insurance that is available locally to help reduce the amount of the deductible, it costs about $12-$29 USD per day reducing the CDW deductible from $0-$400. Personal accident insurance can be purchase locally for about $7 USD per day, which will provide death and disability coverage up to a set monetary amount for the driver and passengers of the rental car. Rental restrictions often change between countries and between car rental suppliers. If you are planning to travel outside of the country you are renting or would like to drop off the rental in another city or country please contact Kemwel to make sure that the rental supplier will allow it.
Rentals commencing in Greece through Kemwel are not permitted to travel outside of the country at this time.
Domestic one-ways are available and additional fees may apply ranging from $0 up to $500 USD. Not all car categories are allowed. International one-way rentals are not permitted from Greece at this time.
