Driving Overview

General Information
Belgium is one of the most well connected countries in the world and home to the only highway that is visible from space. When renting a car in an unfamiliar country, Kemwel would like to suggest trying to learn as much as possible about the rules of the road and traffic laws prior to traveling. Below you will find what we find to be very important information pertaining to the operation of a rental vehicle while in Belgium.

License Requirements
In order to rent a car in Belgium the minimum rental age is 21 years, however age requirements may vary depending on rental supplier and car category. A young driver surcharge may apply to drivers between the ages 21 and 25. With some suppliers in Belgium a maximum rental age of 75 may also apply depending on supplier and car category. The car rental supplier will want to see a valid drivers license, credit card and passport at time of pick up, please have these items ready or easily accessible at time of pick up. Seatbelts must be worn at all times while in the front or rear seats of the vehicle.

Child Seats
Children 3 through 12 must be in an appropriate child safety seat or using seat belts when in the front or rear seats of the vehicle. Children under 3 years must be in an appropriate child safety seat at all times when in the front or rear seats of the vehicle.

Cell Phones
Belgian law prohibits the use of a cell phone while driving. Phone can be used when the vehicle is not mobile and not in traffic.

Emergency Numbers
The following is a list of contact numbers to be used in the event of an emergency while in Belgium: Ambulance/Fire Department: 100 Police: 101 Red Cross: 105 Driving Accidents Ostend: 050 55 87 13 Driving Accidents Brussels: 020 262 220 82

Speed Limits
The speed limit on most highways is 120 km/h (72 mph); the highway speed limit is only posted on roads leaving major airports and at the boarders of the country. In congested areas the max speed is 50 km/h (31 mph), suburban areas 90 km/h (55 mph).

Rules of the Road
Vehicles travel on the right side of the road with the steering wheel on the left. Traffic traveling on the right hand side of the road has the right of way unless noted by road signs otherwise.

Gas and Diesel
Gas stations in Belgium and are usually open from 8am to 8pm daily. Most stations on the highway are open 24 hours.

Tolls
Most of Belgium is toll free with the exception of the Liefenhoeks Tunnel located in Antwerp.

Parking
Blue Zone parking is popular in many cities in Belgium. If you park in a blue zone you must display a blue parking disc, which can be purchased at police stations, gas stations and tobacco shops in the area and are usually valid for up to 3 hours.

Insurance Information

General Information
When renting a car in an unfamiliar country it is always a good idea to find out what forms of insurance are required in the particular country you are traveling to as it can vary from country to country. The insurance guidelines of the country where you pick up the vehicle will be in effect for the duration of your rental even if the rental is returned to another country.

A car rental in Belgium through Kemwel will always include third party liability and fire insurance. Collision damage waiver (CDW) and theft protection are optional and are included on our inclusive rental rates in Belgium. Specific details regarding the insurance on your car rental will print the terms and conditions area of your rental voucher. You may want to decline the CDW and theft protection in order to take advantage of coverage provided by your credit card, in this event please contact your credit card company to learn of the specifics of your coverage.

For rentals commencing in Belgium the following guidelines will apply:

Required Coverage
For car rentals commencing in Belgium fire and third party liability are mandatory. Kemwel has included these two forms of insurances on all rentals taking place in Belgium. Third party liability covers damages to people and property outside of the rental vehicle and with most suppliers will cover an unlimited amount. Fire insurance covers the rental vehicle in the event of a fire and with most rental suppliers covers an unlimited amount.

Optional Coverage
Collision Damage waiver (CDW) and theft protection are included in our inclusive rental rates. When the CDW and Theft is purchased it releases the client from full financial responsibility in the event of a collision or theft. A majority of the suppliers that we work with in Belgium have some form of a deductible the client is still responsible for that can range from $700 USD up to $3100 USD depending on the rental supplier and car category.

Many rental suppliers offer a supplementary insurance locally called Super CDW for a cost of $5-$7 USD per day, this optional insurance will reduce the amount of the deductible to $100-$400 USD in most cases. Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) is available locally with most suppliers for about $7-$10 USD per day, this insurance will help cover medical related expenses up to an amount set by the rental supplier for the driver and passengers. If you are worried about theft of your personal belongings in the rental car then you may want to purchase what is called Personal Effects Coverage (PEC). Personal Effects Coverage is available locally with some rental supplies for about $7 USD per day, this form of insurance will cover items stolen from the vehicle up to an amount set by the local rental supplier.
