Austria’s central European location makes it the perfect place to being your European Tour. In order to rent a car while in Austria the driver must be 18 years or older and have a valid drivers license for a least one year. Please be advised that the age requirements may vary depending on the car category. Driver’s under 25 years of age may have to pay a young driver surcharge depending on the car supplier. An international driver's license is required for all rentals commencing in Austria.
Child Safety Seats
All children up to the age of 12 year or smaller then 1.5 meters must be in an appropriate child safety seats. Children under the age of 12 years must sit in the rear seat of the vehicle at all times. Newborns and babies up to 9 months old or that weigh less the 9 kgs must be placed in a rear facing infant car seat.
When traveling in Austria please be aware of the speed limit as it is heavily enforced. Speed limits in the city is 50 kph (31 mph), on major roadways 100 kph (62 mph) and on the highway 130 kph (81 mph).
Rules of the Road
Vehicle headlights must be on at all times day or night. Seatbelts must be worn at all times by all passengers. The use of cell phones and other hand held devices is prohibited when driving in Austria. The legal blood alcohol content for Austria is .05.
Diesel is also available at most fuel stations in Austria.
Most rental car suppliers equip the rental vehicles with the required toll stickers necessary to drive on the toll roads for a cost of about $1-$2 USD per day. If entering Austria from another country toll stickers can be purchased locally.
Most cities have yellow or blue zones where you can park for up to 1 to 3 hours depending on the zone. To park in one of the zones one must display a parking disk, which can be purchased at banks, shops, or automated disc machines displayed in the area.

In Austria CDW and theft protection are optional and can be added to your rental at anytime prior to the pick up of your rental vehicle. In the event CDW and Theft are declined in order to take advantage of coverage offered by your credit card Kemwel asks for you to contact your credit card company to learn the specifics of your insurance coverage. In Austria Third Party Liability coverage is mandatory for all rentals, for your benefit Kemwel includes this insurance in all of its rental rates in Austria. Third party liability covers injury to people and property outside of the rental vehicle. Third party liability will cover from $ 6,000,000 anywhere up to $9,100,000 USD depending on the rental supplier. Fire insurance is also included in rentals commencing in Austria with Kemwel and covers an unlimited amount.
Collision damage waiver (CDW) and theft protection are optional for rentals commencing in Austria. CDW and Theft protection are included if the inclusive rate is purchased. In Austria the CDW and Theft will carry a deductible that can range anywhere from $650 USD – $ 1600 USD depending on the car category and rental supplier. Super CDW is a supplementary insurance that can be purchased locally with many suppliers to help reduce the amount of the deductible, in Austria the cost can range from $13-$35 USD per day depending on supplier. Personal Accident Insurance can be purchased locally from most rental suppliers in Austria, the cost ranges from $7-$8 USD per day, which will cover the driver and passengers medical related expenses in the event of an accident up to a monetary amount set by the rental supplier. Many of the vehicles rented through Kemwel in Austria can travel throughout Western Europe with any restrictions. There are some vehicles; due to insurance regulations that may not be able to travel into certain countries some of the vehicles include luxury vehicles, automatic vehicles and vans. Due to Kemwel’s great relationship with its suppliers has allowed for the creation of a special program that will allow for travel into select Eastern European countries. An additional surcharge may apply for rental vehicles being taken into Eastern Europe. When planning your itinerary please take into consideration if it will be possible with the category of car you are planning to rent.
Vehicles rented in Austria through Kemwel cannot travel into or through the following countries without prior notification and approval from Kemwel and our suppliers: Albania, Bosnia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Turkey and the Ukraine. Some luxury cars are not allowed into Italy.
NOTE: Travel into most or all of these countries can be arranged for specific car categories with advance notice to Kemwel.
Domestic one-way rentals are available with most suppliers free of charge; if a fee is to be paid you will be advised at time of booking. International one-way rentals are also available and a fee incurred. Not all vehicles are permitted on way rentals.
