Requirements
In Portugal the minimum rental age is 21 years, drivers 21 to 24 may be subject to a young driver surcharge of approximately $115 per rental. Some suppliers in Portugal have a maximum rental age of 70 years. Most car supplier require you to have your drivers license for at least 1 year, some may require a minimum of 2 years in order to rent some specific categories. Children under age 12 or shorter then 1.5 meters must sit in the back seat of the vehicle in a child seat that is appropriate to their size. All other vehicle occupants over the age of 12 must wear a safety belt at all times. The use of a cell phone while driving is strictly prohibited in Portugal.
Speed Limits
In Portugal the following speed limits apply: city 50 km/h (31mph), major roads 90 km/h (55mph) or 100 km/h (62 mph) and on highways 120 km/h (74mph).
Rules of the Road
Vehicles travel on the right hand side of the street. You must not pass an unmoving tram until all tram passengers have finished entering or leaving the tram.
Gas
Most of Portugal’s gas stations are open from 24-hour and charge an extra € .50 (63 US cents) when paying by credit card.
Tolls
There are various toll roads throughout Portugal. Most of the tolls are based on the vehicle category and the distance traveled on the roadway.
Parking
All vehicles must be parked in direction that traffic flows and not within 18meters of an intersection, 15meters of a bus stop or 3meters from a tram stop.

When traveling and renting a vehicle in an unfamiliar place it is always a good idea to find out what the insurance requirements are for vehicle rentals in that specific country. When renting a car with Kemwel in Portugal your rate will include any mandatory insurance necessary.
All of our rental rates in Portugal will include third party liability and fire insurance. In Portugal CDW and theft protection are optional and can be added to your rental at anytime prior to the pick up of your rental vehicle. In the event CDW and Theft are declined in order to take advantage of coverage offered by your credit card Kemwel asks for you to contact your credit card company to learn the specifics of your insurance coverage. Insurance details specific to your rental will print in the terms and conditions area of your rental voucher.

Required Coverage
For rentals commencing in Portugal, third party liability and fire insurance are required. Kemwel includes both forms of insurance on all basic rental rates in Portugal. Fire insurance provides an unlimited amount of coverage to the rental vehicle in the event of a fire. Third party liability provides an unlimited amount of coverage to people and property outside of the rental vehicle.
Optional Coverage
For rentals taking place in Portugal Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and theft protection are optional and are included in all of Kemwel’s inclusive rental rates at an advance purchase discount. Many of the suppliers that we work with will still have a deductible that you will still be responsible for that ranges from $1,140-$4,000 USD for CDW and theft ranges. Super CDW is a supplementary insurance that is available locally to help reduce the amount of the deductible, it costs about $13-$30 USD per day reducing the CDW and Theft deductible to as low as zero in most cases. Personal accident insurance can be purchase locally for about $9 USD per day, this form of insurance will provide death and disability coverage up to a set monetary amount for the driver and passengers of the rental car. General Information
A majority of the vehicles rented through Kemwel in Portugal are allowed to travel into most Western European countries without any restrictions. Certain vehicle categories may have travel restrictions due to insurance regulations including automatic, luxury vehicles, 4x4s and large vans.
Restricted Countries
Rentals beginning in Portugal are prohibited from traveling into the following countries: Albania, Bosnia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey and the Ukraine. Vehicles are strictly prohibited from traveling to the continent of Africa.
Note: Most vehicles are prohibited from traveling to Portuguese and Spanish islands. Some suppliers may also restrict traveling into Italy.
One-Way Rentals
Domestic one-way rentals are available in Portugal, fees can range from $0-$84 USD. International one-way rentals are also available and will incur additional fees. Not all vehicles are permitted and minimum rental lengths may apply.
