Driving Overview

General Information
Whether you are in Hungary to explore the natural thermal springs or to relax at one of the many spas a cheap car rental from Kemwel will allow you to make the most of your Hungarian experience. Below you find a detailed list of things that we feel are beneficial for you to know about before renting and driving a vehicle in Hungary.

In order to rent a vehicle in Hungary you must be at least 21 years old, however age may vary depending on the category of vehicle you are planning to rent. You must have had your driverís license for at least on year and most car suppliers require an international driver's license as well. Headlights are required to be on at all times when traveling outside of a city, high beam headlights are not allowed to be used in a city at anytime day or night. The use of a cell phone it prohibited unless using a hands free device. Hungary practices a zero tolerance policy when it comes to driving under the influence of alcohol, as if caught heavy fines and imprisonment could result.

Child Seats
Children smaller the 1.5 meters are prohibited from traveling in the front seat unless they are in a proper child seat for their age and weight and there is not a working airbag for that seat. Children under the age of 12 years and smaller then 1.5 meters who are sitting in the back seat of the vehicle must be in a proper child seat suitable for their age and weight.

Speed Limits
The speed limits for Hungary are as follows: Highways 130 km/h (80mph), city 50 km/h (31mph), open roads 90 km/h (55mph). Vehicles equipped with snow chains are prohibited from traveling faster then 50 km/h (31mph).

Rules of the Road
Vehicles travel on the right side of road and turning right on red is illegal. If fined due to a traffic violation the fines are payable on the spot in local currency only or at post offices within 30 days of the violation.

Gas and Diesel
You will find a majority of gas stations are open between the hours of 6am to 8pm with some highway stations open 24hrs.

Toll stickers are required for the M1, M3, M5 and M7. Stickers can be purchased for approx $7.50-21 USD depending on the duration selected (4 days, 1 week & 1 month) and are available at gas stations or highway stations throughout Hungary.

Larger cities in Hungary have metered parking with a max limit of 2 hours. Parking is generally permitted on both sides of one-way streets and the right side of two-way streets. Please pay attention to parking signs in the area you are traveling.

Insurance Information

General Information
When renting a car in an unfamiliar country it is always a good idea to find out what forms of insurance are required in the particular country you are traveling to as it can vary from country to country. The insurance guidelines of the country where you pick up the vehicle will be in effect for the duration of your rental even if the rental is returned to another country.

All of our rental rates in Hungary will include third party liability and fire insurance. In Hungary CDW and theft protection are optional and can be added to your rental at anytime prior to the pick up of your rental vehicle. In the event CDW and Theft are declined in order to take advantage of coverage offered by your credit card Kemwel asks for you to contact your credit card company to learn the specifics of your insurance coverage. Insurance details specific to your rental will print in the terms and conditions area of your rental voucher.

At this time we at Kemwel would like for you to take a moment to read about the following insurance guidelines that apply to car rentals in Hungary.

Required Coverage
Third party liability and fire insurance are required on all rentals and are included on all of Kemwelís basic rental rates. Third party liability provides an unlimited amount of coverage for damage to property or injury to people outside of the vehicle. Fire insurance provides an unlimited amount of coverage for the rental vehicle in the event of a fire.

Optional Coverage
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft protection are optional for rentals commencing in Hungary. Kemwel includes these two forms of insurance in our inclusive rental rates, generally at an advance purchase discount. CDW can be purchased locally for approximately $17-$33 USD per day depending on car category. Theft protection is also available locally for approximately $5-$13 USD per day and is also dependant on the category of vehicle rented. Most car suppliers in Hungary will still have a deductible you will be responsible for which can range from $180-$800 USD on CDW and Theft insurances. Optional insurance may only be available with select car suppliers only and participation and cost can vary depending on car category and supplier.

Rental Restrictions

General Information
Most vehicles rented in Hungary through Kemwel are permitted to travel in to most all Western European countries without any restrictions. However luxury vehicles, automatics and large vans due to insurance regulations may have restrictions. Kemwel has an excellent relationship with all of itís suppliers in Hungary, which has help in the creation of a special program that will allow specific vehicles the ability to travel to select Eastern European countries. At this time we ask for you to please take a moment to ensure that your travel itinerary is compatible with the type of vehicle you are planning to rent. Restricted Countries
Vehicles rented in Hungary through Kemwel cannot travel into or through the following countries without prior notification and approval from Kemwel and our suppliers: Albania, Bosnia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Turkey and the Ukraine.

Note: Travel into most or all of these countries can be arranged for specific car categories with advance notice to Kemwel additional fees may apply. Some vehicle categories may also have restrictions for traveling into Italy.

One-Way Rentals
Domestic one-way rentals are available and are generally free of charge with most suppliers. International one-way rentals are also available and will incur an additional surcharge. Not all vehicles are permitted on one-ways.
